Our studio is led by Alan Thompson, an RIBA and RIAS registered architect, who has 25 years’ experience in Architecture and Urban Design. Alan acquired expert design advisory skills while serving as a Senior Government Advisor at the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) and as Head of Design Review at the UK Design Council.
Alan is an affiliated member of the Landscape Institute, an academician of the Academy of Urbanism and a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He has chaired and served on many juries for national award schemes, including: the Housing Design Awards, the Landscape Institute Awards and the Academy of Urbanism Great Streets Awards.
Alan trained as an architect in London and Edinburgh and studied urban design in Venice. In addition to his professional qualifications, he also holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and a master’s degree in architectural history. Alan practiced architecture and urban design with internationally recognised, design-led practices such as ARUP Associates and Avanti Architects.
During his time as a senior advisor at the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE), Alan was lead advisor for the National Design Review Panel and other specialist review panels, including those for the London 2012 Olympic Games and Crossrail.
Alan was also Head of Design Review for Cabe at the Design Council, where he established the London Design Review Panel and oversaw the publication of both "Design Review: Principles and Practice" and "A Design-Led Approach to Infrastructure".
Before establishing A P THOMPSON Built Environment Consultancy, Alan was a partner and Head of City Analytics at Hayes Davidson, where he led an expert team in the preparation of visual impact assessments, supporting some of the most complex and challenging projects in the UK. More recently, Alan worked as a consultant alongside the team at Dominic Lawson Bespoke Planning, providing specialist design-led planning advice.
